Katsuya Yamashiro Sensei

Yamashiro Katsuya Sensei (8th Dan) is the chief instructor of both IOGKF Okinawa and Japan.

Born, raised and having lived his entire life in Naha, the birth place of Goju-Ryu Karate-do, Yamashiro Sensei has one of the deepest understandings of Bu-do and the heart and temperament of a true master.

Exposed to traditional karate through Okinawan culture, it wasn’t until the age of 16 Yamashiro Sensei began officially practising Uechi-ryu at high school. Yamashiro Sensei began practising traditional Goju-ryu karate-do at the age of 18 under one-on-one tutelage from Aragaki Shuichi Sensei, a student of Miyagi Chojun Sensei.

At the age of 28 he was introduced and became a student of Higaonna Morio Sensei, whom he has practised under since, enduring very hard physical training. He is an accomplished tournament competitor and full contact champion in Okinawa multiple times.

Yamashiro Sensei now runs dojos in Itoman and Yonabaru as well as regularly instructing at Honbu Dojo in Naha. He often travels to instruct traditional karate in Europe and across the world in an effort to preserve and promote Goju-ryu karate in its true original form.

Having Yamashiro Sensei in Australia for the first time is a true honour.
