Operating from the welcoming Nailsworth Community Centre, our dojo focuses on preserving the true spirit, precise techniques, and core values of Goju-Ryu. Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced martial artist, we offer a dedicated path toward personal growth and self-defence mastery.
Our History & Okinawan Lineage
IOGKF Adelaide’s roots stretch from Okinawa to Malaysia, and right into the heart of South Australia:
- The foundation: Founded in 2017 by Sensei Enoch Yong, who spent nearly a decade (1989–1997) training in Penang under the late Sensei Michael Ch’ng (former Chief Instructor of IOGKF Malaysia), a direct student of the legendary Higaonna Dojo in Okinawa.
- The growth: After connecting with IOGKF Australia during a national seminar in Canberra, Sensei Enoch became the driving force for the federation in Adelaide.
- The evolution: From 2022 to 2025, the dojo flourished under the joint leadership of Sensei Enoch and Sensei Ryan Burnell (student of Sensei Brent Pawlik), before moving to our current professional facility in 2025.
Our Training Facility: Nailsworth Community Centre
Forget stuffy, cramped training spaces. Our modern dojo is designed for focus and comfort:
- Spacious environment: Easily accommodates up to 20 practitioners with plenty of room for dynamic movement.
- Fully air-conditioned: Train comfortably all year round, regardless of the Adelaide heat.
- Family-friendly location: Situated right next to a popular public family playground — easy to find and highly accessible for local families.
Our Philosophy: Preserving the Heritage
We don’t teach commercialised, watered-down martial arts. At IOGKF Adelaide, we practise traditional Goju-Ryu exactly as it was intended. We’re building a dedicated community of practitioners committed to protecting and continuing this rich martial arts heritage for generations to come.
